Lossiemouth Utd 2 - Ellon 5
With Scott Clark absent due to a family commitment Ryan Petrie took charge of Ellon United last weekend and they returned from Lossiemouth with a 5 - 2 win over Lossiemouth United in their first round tie of The North Regional Cup. The visitors’ success was not without an early scare when the home side took a two goal lead thanks to some careless defending by Ellon at a couple of corners. Ellon passed up the chance to pull a quick goal back when they wasted another penalty kick but gave themselves a lift with a goal before the interval. The visitors took control with the wind at their backs at the start of the second half and soon found themselves comfortably ahead. Lossiemoth were allowed to create some late openings without managing to take advantage and Ellon were eventually able to cruise home.
Ellon faced the wind in the first half but after an encouraging opening spell from the visitors Lossiemouth won a corner in the 8th minute with an Ellon defender unfortunately heading the cross into his own net. Two minutes later and Ellon found themselves 2 - 0 down from another corner. This time McConnachie ran in unchallenged to head home. Ellon were given the chance to open their account from the penalty spot in the 14th minute but Fraser made a comfortable save to maintain his side’s advantage.
Ellon were again unsuccessful in front of goal when Cammy Bruce was just unable to turn home a cross from Chris Huggins but the visitors did grab a goal eight minutes before the break when Cammy Bruce’s volley on the turn flew over keeper Fraser.
Ellon drew level within two minutes of the start of the second period when Chris Huggins latched on to a kick out from Fraser after a pass back and his first time lob caught the keeper stranded. A minute later Fraser scrambled a shot from Calum Annand round his post for a corner. Ellon went in front in the 53rd minute through a fine strike from Matty Edmond after neat build up play between Lewis Duguid and Scott Paterson. The visitors increased their lead five minutes later with Scott Henry’s powerful header off Calum Annand’s tempting cross giving Fraser no chance.
The tie was virtually finished as a contest midway through the half when Keith Robertson beat Fraser with a neat chip. Lewis Duguid came close with a couple of efforts soon afterwards but from then on Ellon took their foot off the pedal and might have been punished late on. A fine save from Richard Bowman in the 81st minute prevented McConnachie from getting on the end of a cut back and then a combination of some positive defensive work and poor finishing prevented Lossiemouth from adding to their tally in the closing stages.
