Ellon 5 - Buckie Rovers 0
Ellon United confirmed their place in the knock out stages of The Grill League Cup with a convincing 5 - 0 win over Buckie Rovers at The Meadows last Saturday to keep their 100% record in their qualifying section. A Cammy Bruce hatrick in the opening half hour and a Chris Huggins strike saw the home side take a comfortable 4 - 0 lead into the interval. The second period was more even but Matty Edmond took advantage of a defensive mix up midway through the half to well and truly seal the result.
United opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Chris Huggins headed Stewart Henderson’s corner back into the danger area with Cammy Bruce collecting the loose ball and setting himself up before firing home. Cammy Bruce added his second three minutes later with Chris Huggins again providing the final pass. Chris Huggins latched on to a through ball from Scott Henry midway through the opening period only to see his shot crash off the stanchion.
Ellon were 3 - 0 ahead on the half hour mark when Matty Edmond fed Stewart Henderson whose cross was finished off by Cammy Bruce to complete his hatrick ( pay up grandad). The visitors threatened to grab a goal back two minutes later but Scott Henry was on hand to boot the ball clear. United finished the half strongly and were rewarded when Chris Huggins picked up a cross from Matty Edmond to drive home number for to complete an opening half completely dominated by the home side who were solid defensively and always carried a goal threat..
A Scott Robison effort five minutes into the second half flew just over with Buckie responding through a Bell header which went wide. Matty Edmond curled a shot over with Buckie again countering straight away with a corner which was headed clear by Michael Fletcher.
An excellent run by Calum Annand saw the full back break up the right before finding Keith Reid whose shot slipped just beyond the far post. United scored their 5th in the 69th minute. A neat interchange between Ryan Petrie, Calum Annand and Chris Huggins ended with the ball fired low into the goal area with Matty Edmond making the Buckie defence pay for their hesitancy by drilling home into an unguarded net.
Keeper Todd did well to deny Stewart Henderson at the expense of a corner after Ryan Petrie and Stewart Henderson had worked the opening. With United comfortably ahead they were twice found guilty of committing casual passes which Buckie were unable to take advantage of. before Ryan Petrie sent a low curling shot just beyond Todd’s far post then a Keith Reid shot was blocked for a corner as Ellon continued to threaten.
