Ellon 3 - Buchanhaven Hearts 2
Ellon United escaped with the points in their Tuesday night league match at The Meadows against Buchanhaven Hearts with a Matty Edmond goal four minutes from time edging United home 3 - 2 after having been 2 - 0 down after only seventeen minutes played. A very lethargic United side failed to get into their stride and found themselves behind in the 9th minute through Barbour although the home support were mystified as to why Keith Reid’s early goal was chalked off. A great left foot drive from Marchi in the 17th minute put the visitors well in command. Hearts failed to take advantage of a penalty when Park put his spot kick wide and were made to pay when Andy McCraw curled home a free kick in the last minute of the first half to pull United back into contention.
United were again unable to take control after the break but fought back to square matters in the 80th minute when Chris Huggins came in to bullet home a header at the far post. Just when it looked like the sides would have to settle for a share of the points United were awarded a free kick up their right and Andy McCraw’s wicked low inswing ball was flicked home by Matty Edmond at the near post.
ELLON UNITED: Bowman, Annand, McCraw, Clark, Allsop, Henry, Henderson, Fletcher, Reid, Bruce, Edmond. Subs: Gunn, Robison, Huggins, Irvine, Pugh.
BUCHANHAVEN HEARTS: Gatt, McLean, Peden, Duncan, Simpson, Park, Marchi, Keith, Barbour, Cunningham, McKechnie. Subs: Taylor, Porter, Clark, Donaldson, Ritchie.
United complete their qualifying section next Saturday with the visit of Buckie Rovers to The Meadows, KO 2:30pm. A point would ensure United’s place in the knock out stages although Deveronside need to beat East End and overturn a 9 goal deficit to pip United if Ellon fail to take care of the business of their own account. United’s final midweek game is a home league fixture against Longside at The Meadows on Wednesday 19th August, KO 6:45pm.
